Speaker(s): RTI Session Description: Join LDA as some of the nation’s top experts discuss RTI and specific learning disabilities, then join us in a discussion of three most important issues: 1. How are students with learning disabilities different from other students who are low achieving? 2. Why is it important to define the difference? 3. Why is this difference instructionally important? Experts in the learning disabilities field will discuss current policy and practices related to learning disabilities evaluation and identification; advances in cognitive ability assessment; considerations for the assessment of culturally and linguistically diverse individuals at-risk for learning disabilities; the role of response to intervention in delivering high quality instruction/interventions in general education and its evolving role into SLD evaluation and identification; research based intervention for individuals with learning disabilities; and legal and advocacy implications of stemming from current research on learning disabilities. Response to Intervention (RTI) was introduced in the 2004 Reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Since then it has become part of special education law and regulations. The promises of RTI were that all students would receive high-quality instruction in regular education, levels of student achievement would rise, and fewer students would be found to have learning disabilities. However, after more than a decade of RTI, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) test scores show students with learning disabilities continue to achieve well below what should reasonably be expected for them. The Symposium will close with a moderated discussion and audience participation. WKN: A Path to Pride and Success Learn more WKN: A Path to Pride and Success Speaker(s): Keynote Session Description: The grandson of one of New Jersey’s most prominent civil rights leaders, LeDerick uses his gift for spoken-word poetry as the gateway to larger discussions on equal opportunity, pride, self-determination and hope for people with disabilities. He regularly addresses an array of academic, government, social, and business groups, including appearances at the White House, the United Nations, Harvard University, the National Association of State Directors of Special Education, and the Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Nevada, and Alabama State Departments of Education. His work addresses the challenges of all disabilities, uniting the efforts of diverse groups in order to achieve substantive, systemic change. Drawing from the forthcoming book “Empowering Students with Hidden Disabilities: A Path to Pride and Success,” this keynote session will provide advice and strategies to help improve the outcomes of students learning within an inclusive classroom. Examples of how to strengthen skills associated with self-disclosure and self-advocacy will be presented. Participants will also develop an understanding of how to help their students develop and maintain a sense of disability pride in order to reach their transition goals. W1: Executive Functioning, Children's Behavior Problems, and Interventions Learn more W1: Executive Functioning, Children's Behavior Problems, and Interventions Speaker(s): Mental Health Session Description: Many children with neurodevelopmental disorders and learning disabilities are reported to exhibit externalizing behaviors problems that may be attributed to impairments in executive functions (EF). Often children with deficits in EF may be described as impulsive, noncompliant, and disruptive. Without interventions, children with deficits in EF may experience peer rejection, school failure, and have difficulties adhering to social norms. This talk will provide parents, teachers, and others working with children with diverse learning needs an overview of EF and the impact on children’s behavior. The presenters will discuss evidence-based interventions addressing deficits in EF to improve self-regulation and behavior in clinical and group settings. Also, the presentation will provide information on strategies to improve children’s self-regulation, behavior, and overall outcomes. W3: Scripts and Rubrics: Partnership for Writing Success Learn more W3: Scripts and Rubrics: Partnership for Writing Success Speaker(s): Instruction Session Description: This workshop will provide a quick overview of the complexity of the writing process, highlighting why it is such a problematic process for youngsters with learning disabilities. Practical strategies to remediate and/or compensate for writing difficulties will be discussed. A major portion of the session will focus on using composition scripts and graphic organizers during pre-writing activities and using rubrics to help students revise their compositions. A step-by-step approach to teaching students how to use rubrics will be modeled.
